Orioles Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Brad Bergesen stepped back on the mound to face opposing hitters for the first time since taking a line drive off his right shin last summer.

After a long rehab process, in which he also injured his pitching shoulder taping a team commercial, Bergesen debuted with two earned runs scattered over 1 1/3 innings against Pittsburgh. Bergesen allowed three hits and a walk in reaching his 35-pitch plateau.

Yet he wasn't overly impressed.

"I'm disappointed," Bergesen told reporters. "I think it was definitely a positive, getting out there and getting going again, but you never like to go an inning and a third when you're supposed to go two innings, and give up the hits I gave up."

Bergesen struggled with command, throwing just 18 strikes in his 35 pitches.

Marlins-Orioles game rained out (AP)
After Friday's game between the Florida Marlins and Baltimore Orioles was canceled because of rain, to give pitchers extra work the Marlins and Orioles scheduled a 7-inning game at Sarasota on Saturday morning. Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said Sean West will start. Mark Hendrickson will start for the Orioles.

Mauer leaves Twins win with shoulder injury (AP)
AL MVP Joe Mauer collected two hits before leaving the Minnesota Twins' 8-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night with a sore right shoulder. Before hitting his second single in the third inning, Mauer fouled a pitch off his shoulder and manager Ron Gardenhire replaced him with Drew Butera in the fourth.

Scott helps Orioles beat Pirates 3-2 (AP)
Zach Duke found a silver lining in his rough start Wednesday night. Duke settled down after allowing three runs in the first and pitched 2 2-3 innings in the Pittsburgh Pirates' 3-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. "My stuff was definitely good," he said "But I was falling behind with my sinker, and I need that pitch to be effective.

Matt Wieters was the center of attention when he reported to spring training last year. This year, everything has been much quieter. To Wieters, it's a welcome change. Baltimore Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts said Wednesday he is better, two days after feeling ill. He said he wasn't sure if the illness was due to a medication given during his rehabilitation for a back injury. Niemann, Longoria lead Rays over Orioles (AP)

Rays right-hander Jeff Niemann breezed through his start Tuesday. The Baltimore Orioles made it easy on him. Niemann became the first Tampa Bay pitcher to complete four innings this spring, leading the Rays to an 8-3 victory against the Orioles. Niemann threw just 36 pitches while allowing one run and two hits.

Both pitched well, and Pittsburgh beat the Orioles 5-3 on Friday night for its first win of the spring. Zach Duke tossed two solid innings in his first outing of the year. An All-Star last season, Duke is likely to start for the Pirates on opening day.

Brian Matusz was hoping for an easy start in his spring debut. Even though the Baltimore Orioles left-hander struck out the side in the first inning in Thursday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the third at-bat had a midseason feel. Against Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria, Matusz threw pitch-after-pitch as Longoria kept fouling them off, breaking two bats in the process.

Miguel Tejada started getting comfortable at his new position, and the Baltimore Orioles broke in their new spring home with a bevy of long balls. Josh Bell and Rhyne Hughes each hit two home runs as the Orioles hit six homers in winning their spring opener, 12-2 Wednesday over the Tampa Bay Rays. Tejada made his first appearance at third base in his 13-season big league career.
