Angels Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

Kendry Morales got a late start in spring training because of a slow-to-process work visa application. But the Angels are counting on the Cuban first baseman to use his breakout 2009 season as a springboard to more success.

Stepping into shoes vacated by Mark Teixeira last year, Morales had one of the best seasons ever by an Angels first baseman. In his first full season in the big leagues, Morales hit .306 with 34 home runs and 108 RBI and finished fifth in the American League MVP voting.

It was more than the Angels could have expected—but it is what they need him to duplicate in 2010.

"What I think Kendry showed was that he's able to bring his talent not only into a game but into a season and maintain it for a whole year," manager Mike Scioscia said.

Royals' homers overcome Santana's 3 strong innings (AP)
All the Kansas City Royals' offensive damage was done after Los Angeles Angels starter Ervin Santana had left Saturday. Chris Getz and Mitch Maier hit two-run homers in the fourth inning off reliever Rafael Rodriguez and the Royals defeated the Angels 12-3. The Royals collected 15 hits, including six for extra bases, but the only hit Santana permitted was a Willie Bloomquist leadoff infield...

Cleveland's Carmona pitches well in 7-7 tie (AP)
Fausto Carmona showed good command while pitching three scoreless innings Friday. Joe Smith wasn't so sharp. Carmona allowed just one hit during his impressive outing but the Cleveland Indians blew a three-run lead in the ninth against a Los Angeles Angels split-squad. The Indians failed to score in their half of the ninth and the game ended in a 7-7 tie.

Peavy looks sharp in first start for White Sox (AP)
Jake Peavy's first spring training outing looked more like a regular-season start. He was that sharp, and showed no signs of fatigue from jamming at his late-night "Woodjock" charity concert Thursday that drew some 1,200 people. The Chicago White Sox also looked impressive at the plate in a 10-7 victory against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, getting two-run homers from Gordon...

Jackson strong again, Diamondbacks beat Angels 4-1 (AP)
With the uncertain status of Brandon Webb, newcomer Edwin Jackson's performance thus far this spring must be comforting for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The right-hander, acquired in a trade with the Detroit Tigers in the offseason, blanked the Los Angeles Angels on one hit through three innings in Arizona's 4-1 victory on Thursday.

Wood's hard knocks might be ending (Yahoo! Sports)
Power-hitting Angels infielder Brandon Wood is finally getting a chance to play, and he feels up to the task.

Reds' Leake throws 2 solid innings against Angels (AP)
Reds prospect Mike Leake threw two crisp innings in Cincinnati's 6-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Leake, the eighth overall pick in last year's draft, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one. "It was kind of fun facing some major leaguers," he said, "facing some people I've been watching on TV.

Hunter says black Latino players are 'impostors' (AP)
Los Angeles Angels center fielder Torii Hunter insists he meant no harm toward Latino players when he referred to them as "impostors" while discussing the number of African-Americans in the major leagues. Hunter's original comments were made two weeks ago in one of a series of USA Today roundtables about baseball and published in Wednesday's editions.

Matsui goes 1 for 2 in Angels debut (AP)

San Diego Padres' Everth Cabrera(notes), left, laughs with teammate Jerry Hairston Jr.(notes) as the two run off the field after the fourth inning in a spring training baseball game Tuesday, March 9, 2010, in Tempe, Ariz. The Angels defeated the Padres 6-5.

Hideki Matsui finally got the chance to play for the Los Angeles Angels. Matsui made his spring debut on Tuesday, getting a single in two trips to the plate during a 6-5 win over the San Diego Padres. The designated hitter struck out against Chris Young in the first and grounded Radhames Liz's 3-1 pitch up the middle for a hit in the fourth.

Athletics-Angels rained out (AP)

A field attendant looks out on the tarp-covered field at Tempe Diablo Stadium before the Los Angeles Angels' spring training baseball game against the Oakland Athletics in Tempe, Ariz., Sunday, March 7, 2010. The game was later canceled because of rain.

The Oakland Athletics at Los Angels Angels game has been rained out Sunday. About 50 Japanese media were in attendance to cover Hideki Matsui's debut with the Angels. Matsui signed a one-year, $6 million free-agent contract after being named World Series MVP with the New York Yankees last season. Angels manager Mike Scioscia told reporters earlier in camp that Matsui would be treated carefully...

Crisp gets two hits in A's win (AP)

Oakland Athletics designated hitter Coco Crisp(notes) singles off Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Jered Weaver(notes) during the first inning of their spring training baseball game in Phoenix, Saturday, March 6, 2010.

Coco Crisp's debut with Oakland gave manager Bob Geren an interesting dilemma at the top of the batting order. Crisp doubled and singled, Steve Tolleson drove in the go-ahead run and the Athletics beat the Los Angeles Angels 4-2 on Saturday. "That was a real nice first game," Geren said of Crisp.

Delayed by traffic, Jimenez comes out of bullpen (AP)
Next time, maybe Ubaldo Jimenez will just take the team bus. Held up by a traffic jam, Jimenez arrived too late to start Friday and instead made his spring training debut out of the bullpen for the Colorado Rockies. Slated to pitch against the Los Angeles Angels, Jimenez opted to drive himself to the ballpark rather than ride with the team.

Wagner's single gives Red Sox 2-1 win over Twins (AP)

Minnesota Twins' Jacque Jones(notes), left, catches a fly ball hit by Boston Red Sox's David Ortiz(notes) in the first inning of a spring training baseball game in Fort Myers, Fla., Thursday, March 4, 2010. At right is Twins' Denard Span(notes).

Mark Wagner's tiebreaking single in the eighth inning gave the Boston Red Sox a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins in the spring training opener for both teams Thursday night. The catcher, ticketed to start the season in the minors barring an injury to Victor Martinez or Jason Varitek, singled in Josh Reddick, who had doubled and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Darnell McDonald.

Angels and White Sox tied 4-4 when game is called (AP)
Chicago's A.J. Pierzynski hit a two-run homer to highlight a three-run third inning, and Los Angeles catcher Mike Napoli also homered as the White Sox and Angels played to a 4-4 tie Thursday before the Cactus League opener for both teams was called after nine innings. Chicago left-hander John Danks played his first professional game with brother Jordan Danks, who started in right field, and...
