Perez strong, Mets hit 4 HRs to top Tigers 9-1 (AP)

Shortstop Jose Reyes is likely to open the season on the disabled list after tests conducted at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan revealed continued hyperactivity in the infielder's thyroid gland.

Reyes will be prohibited from any physical exertion until his thyroid activity normalizes. That could take between two and eight weeks, agent Peter Greenberg said. Reyes, who will remain in New York, will be tested weekly. He's been told to avoid seafood.

The loss is a devastating blow to the Mets. The team already is without center fielder Carlos Beltran potentially until mid-May after he underwent right knee surgery in January. Manager Jerry Manuel hoped to use Reyes in the No.

John Lackey is off to a nice start with the Red Sox. The right-hander threw three shutout innings in Boston's 8-2 victory over Jason Bay and the New York Mets on Thursday. Lackey allowed three hits and has yet to allow a run in five innings over two outings this spring. The former Angels star joined the Red Sox in December when he finalized an $82.5 million, five-year contract.




Reyes told to rest until thyroid normalizes (AP)

4 minor leaguers suspended for positive drug tests (AP)
Four Dominican Summer League players, including a pair of New York Yankees prospects, have been suspended for the first 50 games of the season following positive tests for steroids under baseball's minor league drug program. Yankees pitcher Israel Tolentino and catcher Josue Rodriguez were penalized along with New York Mets pitcher Melvin Colon and Cleveland Indians outfielder Steven Lebron.

Torrealba still fears for family in Venezuela (AP)
Although Yorvit Torrealba's son is safe, the San Diego Padres catcher still fears for the rest of his family. Nine months after his son was kidnapped by five men in Caracas, Venezuela, and later returned unharmed, Torrealba said his son and wife are now living in Miami and adjusting to their new lives.

Setup reliever still undecided for Manuel, Mets (AP)
The eighth-inning setup role has been a big question for the New York Mets at spring training, and an answer doesn't appear to be coming any time soon. Veteran pitcher Kelvim Escobar has spent time in both the bullpen and starting rotation during his 12-year career and appeared to be the front-runner for the job entering camp.

Tony Clark hired by baseball players' union (AP)
Former first baseman Tony Clark has been hired as director of player relations of the baseball union. The union on Wednesday also formalized Steve Fehr's role as special counsel. His brother, Donald, retired as union head in December. He has been an outside lawyer for the union for 23 years. Clark's 15-season career ended last July when he was released by Arizona.

Johan Santana struggled in his first game since August, allowing four runs on six hits in 1 2-3 innings, and the Houston Astros beat the New York Mets 8-4 on Tuesday. Kaz Matsui hit a solo homer for the first of four straight hits in the first inning off Santana, who struck out one and walked one. Mets pitchers Pelfrey, K-Rod back on mound (AP)
Mets right-hander Mike Pelfrey returned to the mound Tuesday after being sidelined by a sore right leg. Pelfrey was struck on the outside of the knee by a comebacker during his first spring start Saturday. He stayed in the game against the Nationals and pitched three innings, but he pushed a scheduled bullpen session back a day because the leg was sore.

Oliver Perez threw strikes, and that was enough for the New York Mets for now. Perez was hit hard in his first spring start, but Omir Santos' inside-the-park grand slam helped the Mets beat the Washington Nationals 6-5 on Sunday. The Mets are looking for a big year from Perez, who finished last season on the disabled list after undergoing right knee surgery September 1.




Pelfrey shows off new splitter, Mets top Nats 14-6 (AP)
Mike Pelfrey sawed off a couple of bats with a new pitch, didn't get down on himself and recovered from a shaky start. Pelfrey unveiled an effective split-finger fastball in his first spring start, Fernando Martinez had four hits and homered twice, and the New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 14-6 on Saturday.

Brad Penny's debut in a St. Louis Cardinals uniform was rocky, yet he was pleased with his first outing of the spring. Penny pitched two innings, allowing three runs and six hits in the Cardinals' 7-3 loss to a New York Mets' split squad Friday. Three of those hits were soft flyballs that landed just beyond the infield.




Volstad and Niese sharp in spring debuts (AP)
The Marlins' Chris Volstad and Mets' Jon Niese each looked sharp in their spring mound debuts and Florida beat a New York split squad 4-3 in 10 innings Friday. The Mets played without shortstop Jose Reyes, who was sent back to New York for further medical tests after it was discovered he had a thyroid imbalance.
