HOW MANY TIMES HAVE THE GIANTS WON THE WORLD SERIES?
Since the inception of the modern World Series in 1903, the San Francisco Giants have won the World Series five times. Or, more accurately, the New York Giants won the World Series, before the team moved to San Francisco. This places the team in a three-way tie, with the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates, for sixth place on the list of World Series Championships. They are behind the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, Oakland Athletics, Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers. Their World Series championships were:
- In 1905, against the Philadelphia Athletics, four games to one
- In 1921, against the New York Yankees, five games to three (nine-game series)
- In 1922, against the New York Yankees, four games to zero
- In 1933, against the Washington Senators (now the Minnesota Twins), four games to one
- In 1954, against the Cleveland Indians, four games to zero
The Giants won the National League pennant but lost the World Series, in New York, in 1911, 1912, 1913, 1917, 1923, 1924, 1936, 1937 and 1951 and, in San Francisco, in 1962, 1989 and 2002. The New York Giants also won the National League pennant in 1904, the second year of the "modern World Series" era, but refused to play the American League champion Boston Red Sox because they considered the American League "inferior" to the National League. No World Series was played that year.
