Milwaukee beats San Francisco Giants 10-8 (AP)
Catcher Gregg Zaun kept up his solid spring with a two-run double and Milwaukee beat the San Francisco Giants 10-8 on Sunday. Brewers starter Jeff Suppan gave up four solo home runs. The game was played in front of a second straight sellout crowd of 12,000 at Scottsdale Stadium, including commissioner Bud Selig, a former owner of the Brewers.

Giants Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Giants want 20-year-old left-hander Madison Bumgarner to be their No. 5 starter, but 31-year-old right-hander Todd Wellemeyer was pushing hard for the job.

One day after Bumgarner walked four batters and yielded three hits in two innings against the Mariners, Wellemeyer tossed four innings of two-hit ball against the Rockies.

"I'll say this: We'll stay open-minded," manager Bruce Bochy said.

The Giants might not need a fifth starter in early April because of off days, so Bumgarner could open the season with Class AAA Fresno. The Giants see Wellemeyer as the long reliever.

Wellemeyer had a good season in 2008 with St. Louis (13-9, 3.71 ERA) but struggled last year (7-10, 5.89 ERA).

"I'm trying to focus on getting better at pitching and not worrying...

Pucetas impresses in Giants' 8-4 win over Mariners (AP)
San Francisco pitcher Kevin Pucetas continued his spotless spring by retiring all nine Seattle hitters he faced and outfielder Andres Torres homered, doubled and scored three times for a Giants split squad that beat the Mariners 8-4 Saturday. Pucetas has turned it around from last spring when he had an 8.04 ERA and allowed 41 base runners in 15-plus innings.

Gonzalez makes his case to be a starter for A's (AP)
Gio Gonzalez might ride his new-look changeup right into the Oakland Athletics' rotation. He sure is making a strong case to be the A's fifth starter. The left-hander, competing with Trevor Cahill and Vin Mazzaro to win the job, pitched three scoreless innings and struck out three in his first start of the spring as Oakland beat Bay Area rival San Francisco 8-7 on Saturday.

Healthy Renteria ready for new season with Giants (AP)
Edgar Renteria rolled his left shoulder back a couple of times to get loose, a regular thing for him each morning. And afternoon. And evening. San Francisco's shortstop is doing a lot of extra stretching and exercises these days in an effort to make sure his body holds up for an entire season. He was limited to 124 games in 2009 in his first year with the Giants, largely because of two aching...

Giants' Lincecum taking his routine more seriously (AP)
Tim Lincecum stayed under cover on the dugout steps and quickly assessed the heavy rain soaking the San Francisco Giants' spring training field. Then he was off, headed to the weight room for a workout. Entering his third full major league season, the two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award winner knows he needs to take his routine up a notch in order to maintain his dominance on the mound.

Wellemeyer effective, Giants beat Rockies 9-2 (AP)
To ensure Jason Giambi stays fresh, the Colorado Rockies have been careful with his playing time. No sense wearing out the 38-year-old in March. Giambi made his spring training debut Friday, flying out to center and taking a pitch off the forearm in the Rockies' 9-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

Giants slugger Sandoval content with his size (AP)
Pablo Sandoval sure is taking a lot of flak for his weight struggles these days. Not that it's obvious talking to him. He seems completely unfazed and focused on his performance on the field. No matter the number on the scale -- he prefers not to share his weight -- San Francisco's free-swinging slugger insists he is strong, agile on defense and moving well when running the bases.

Lincecum struggles through another start (AP)
Tim Lincecum's 19-pitch first inning was an adventure. A leadoff double to Ichiro Suzuki followed by a walk. A flyout, then a strikeout on a double steal. And a two-run single by -- surprise -- old San Francisco teammate Ryan Garko. Eric Byrnes eventually grounded out. Lincecum, the two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, doesn't quite look like himself yet at spring training and struggled...

Cepeda, Mays, McCovey, Perry make visit to Giants (AP)
Orlando Cepeda and Felipe Alou used to hit up Giants teammate Willie Mays when they needed a little extra cash. The $5 of daily meal money didn't stretch very far back in the 1960s. "I was the banker," Mays said. "We're grateful to him for everything," Cepeda said. "We learned so much from him.

Sandoval hits grand slam as Giants beat Cubs 5-1 (AP)

San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Jonathan Sanchez(notes) throws before the first inning of a spring training baseball game against the Chicago Cubs Wednesday, March 10, 2010, in Mesa, Ariz.

Pablo Sandoval now has bragging rights over Carlos Zambrano, the pitcher he grew up idolizing back home in Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. Still, the Giants third baseman isn't ready to boast just yet. "I'm not going to tell him anything," Sandoval said Wednesday after his grand slam off Zambrano led San Francisco to a 5-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Burbank, Calif., police reported Tuesday, March 9, 2010, that Davis was found dead in his Burbank, Calif., home. He was 69.

Willie Davis, a speedy center fielder who collected two World Series rings, three Gold Gloves and was a two-time All-Star during his 14 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, has died. He was 69. "He was beloved by generations of Dodger fans and remains one of the most talented players ever to wear the Dodger uniform.

Giants' DeRosa looks good in first spring outing (AP)

Chicago White Sox' Juan Pierre(notes), left, is congratulated by manager Ozzie Guillen after scoring against the San Francisco Giants in the first inning of a spring training baseball game in Scottsdale, Ariz., Tuesday, March 9, 2010.

One pitch, one swing and Mark DeRosa showed the kind of threat he can be for San Francisco's offense. DeRosa lined a sharp single over shortstop Omar Vizquel's head in his debut at-bat after being limited following October wrist surgery, and the Giants beat the Chicago White Sox 6-2 on Tuesday.

Muhammad Ali visits Giants clubhouse (AP)
Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda are regular visitors around the San Francisco Giants. But when Muhammad Ali showed up in the clubhouse Tuesday to tout his Athletes for Hope charity campaign, players, coaches, clubbies and even the general manager and owner stood in line for photos with the 68-year-old former heavyweight champion.

San Francisco 2B Freddy Sanchez eager to return (AP)
San Francisco second baseman Freddy Sanchez has begun taking swings off a tee and considers himself ahead of schedule as he recovers from a procedure on his non-throwing left shoulder. Still, Sanchez is set to begin the season on the disabled list. "That hasn't changed," general manager Brian Sabean said.

Dodgers pitchers like what they get from Ellis (AP)

San Francisco Giants' John Bowker(notes) makes his way around the bases after hitting a triple to right field off Los Angeles Dodgers' Clayton Kershaw(notes) during the fourth inning of their spring training game in Scottsdale, Ariz., Monday, March 8, 2010.

Russell Martin's replacement as Los Angeles catcher is a little-known guy named A.J. Ellis, an 18th-round draft pick out of Austin Peay. The defending NL West champion Dodgers are depending on him behind the plate -- big time. Ellis worked six innings in Los Angeles' 3-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Monday in his first start since Martin was sidelined by a pulled groin that likely...
